the revolution -  
with Pong. It was 
very primitive, a 
simple to-and-fro 
on a black-and-
white screen, but

video game

Pong was soon 
followed by Space 
Invaders - the 
first of the shoot-
'em-up games. At 
this stage people 
still had to go to a 
bar or a games 
arcade to play. 
But Atari's home 
entertainment 
system was about
to change that

Atari exploded on 
the games scene 
in 1972. The 
millions of people 
who spent hours 
hunched over 
their games 
consoles pushed 
the  company's 
stock sky-high; 
and Bushnell took 
his profits and 
left. Years later 
he returned to 
the scene of his 
great triumph

A new generation 
of interactive 
video games will 
take the industry 
into the next 
century. Games 
that rely on voice 
recognition are 
here, while tie-
ups with the 
movie business 
mean players 
may soon be able 
to star in their 
favorite films
