It was very primitive, a simple to-and-fro on a black-and- white screen, but it was the first video game # Pong was soon followed by Space Invaders - the first of the shoot- 'em-up games. At this stage people still had to go to a bar or a games arcade to play. But Atari's home entertainment system was about to change that # Atari exploded on the games scene in 1972. The millions of people who spent hours hunched over their games consoles pushed the company's stock sky-high; and Bushnell took his profits and left. Years later he returned to the scene of his great triumph # A new generation of interactive video games will take the industry into the next century.
